A web designer or developer is involved in creating a website that is fit for purpose, looks good and is easy to use. They will design the graphics and layout of the site, create any technical content and may continue to help with its maintenance and any updating once it has been launched. Most companies now have a website and the need for talented designers is ever growing.

University Course

As well as many general computing courses that teach web design as one of their modules, there are also lots of courses which specialise in website design and development. Most courses are either three or four year bachelor degrees; depending on whether or not you can take a year in industry. When choosing which course to apply for you should check to see what facilities are available and which software you will be using. A web developer needs to stay up-to-date with every development in new technology so studying at an institution that provides modern amenities will help you enormously.

Education Pathway

Most web developers now hold a university bachelor degree which requires at least five GCSEs graded A*-C, including ones in maths and English. After this you should complete either A levels or a B-TEC in IT or a related subject. Some web developers start by studying graphic design before specialising in information technology when at university.

Work Experience

As with most creative industries many employers are keen to see a portfolio of your work, and sometimes place more emphasis on this than your formal qualifications. It will be of great advantage if you can begin designing websites as early as possible. This could be simply designing sites for your own pleasure or ones for friends or relatives. Some local businesses may want someone to help them set up a website so asking them would be another option. Make sure you keep a record of all the work you do so that you can show it to university admissions officers and prospective employers.

Career pathways after graduation

After graduation you can find many opportunities in all sectors of business. As technology continually develops the need for trained, talented designers becomes even more important. Once you have gained experience in the field you will be able to become a head designer and lead your own team or diversify into freelance designing or teaching.
